1984 by George Orwell

This was the book chosen by the HBN book group for their May meeting. It seems that when it was first published that it was met with cries of “plagiarism” as the plot was almost identical to Yevgeny Zamyatin’s “We” which was published in English in 1924, but not in Russia until after glasnost. Orwell had actually suggested in a review (3 years before 1984 was published) that “Brave New World” by Huxley was very similar. I would imagine that there are not many who have not read 1984, so feel free to leave your comments in the box below. Is it still relevant? Is our society more scrutinised nowadays than in 1948 – or 1984?
